Security Awareness : Laptop Checklist


Have you ever checked on your habit of handling laptops? Here is the checklist that you guys should check to properly handle a laptop. Lets gooo!1. Do not use your laptop on the bed ✔️

Have you ever done this before? Did you know that leaving your laptop on textiles, pillows, or even carpeting will hinder it from adequately releasing heat? Internal components such as the CPU, hard drive, video card, and the battery can be damaged by heat trapped inside the laptop. You may need to replace damaged components if the laptop is exposed to extreme temperatures for a long time.

2. Add a privacy screen ✔️

Shoulder Surfing is more prevalent than you may believe. Humans are naturally inquisitive, so whether you’re at the office or in public places, they will spontaneously peek at your screen. Add a privacy screen that limits viewing angles to prevent shoulder surfing attacks and increase your privacy.

💡 Shoulder surfing attacks is a type of social engineering technique that involves snooping over your shoulder while you use a laptop to acquire information.

3. Add a webcam cover ✔️

Due to COVID-19, many of us are working from home, and webcam coverings are more vital than ever. Surveillance and webcam attacks may be possible if you leave your camera exposed.

4. Browse the web safely ✔️

This is the typical reminder as it is the basic ethics surfing across the internet. Please be aware of the proper way to browse the web. Following are the steps you may alert on:

  • If possible choose the https web, it is more secure which using encrypted communication protocol; Transport Layer Security or formerly, Secure Sockets Layer.
  • Make sure your anti virus is updated.
  • Clear browser cache and cookies to ensure there is no website that track your browsing data.
  • Please be aware on which the website will redirect to before clicking on it.

5. Use a proper bag ✔️

Place your laptop in its protective case. Make sure it is properly inserted and firmly closed. Many backpack-friendly laptop cases are built with slender, reinforced sleeves to toughen up any backpack. It will guarantee that the laptop is protected by a sturdy sleeve. At least, it gives extra protection if you inadvertently put pressure on it.

1. Move your laptop while its running ❌

A read/write head on a hard drive must move to communicate with the spinning disc. Because these components have their inertia, if you move your laptop while they’re running, it’ll strive to return to its original position. This can result in contact with internal hard drive components, potentially resulting in data loss.
Moving laptop while it is running should be limited and be gently way.

2. Leaving it sleep mode for a long time ❌

In a sleep mode, the data is still in the volatile RAM. Any unsaved data is lost and cannot be retrieved in the event of a power outage. Moreover, it uses small power consumption, but in a continuous time. Try to avoid sleep mode if not necessary.

3. Use harsh chemicals to cleans the LCD screen ❌

NEVER use harsh chemicals to clean your LCD screen. Use the right materials and ensure the cleaning solutions are suitable or you can easily buy the specific one that sells in the markets. The screen is like skincare, you should be aware of the product you use.

4. Press the keyboard roughly ❌

You might feel satisfied when you hear the sound of keyboard typing but did you know that it eventually will damage your keyboard as you put too much pressure on the keyboard.

5. Leave your laptop unlock ❌

Always lock your laptop whenever leaves your workplace to avoid data breach. Theft gain access to everything from financial information to security codes, intellectual property, passwords, or even worse could happen. It is always better to prevent instead of cure right?
